Born in Tokyo to a family of educators, Daniel Takahashi (born March 15, 1985) developed an early fascination with Southeast Asia through his grandfather's stories of diplomatic service in post-war Indonesia. This childhood curiosity blossomed during his studies at Keio University, where he majored in International Relations with a Southeast Asian concentration. His bilingual upbringing in Japanese and English, combined with self-taught Bahasa Indonesia, created the foundation for his cross-cultural reporting style.

Takahashi began his career at NHK World in 2008, quickly distinguishing himself through his coverage of the Thai political crisis. His 2012 investigative series "The Mekong's Children" exposed labor exploitation across three countries, winning the Asia-Pacific Journalism Prize. For over a decade, he's been based in Jakarta while covering 11 Southeast Asian nations, specializing in political transitions and environmental challenges.
