Girl with a Pearl Earring has returned to Japan for the first time in 14 years, triggering pilgrimage-like queues outside the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka on its opening day, 21 August 2026. The iconic Johannes Vermeer painting is on loan from the Mauritshuis in The Hague while the Dutch museum closes for renovation, and organisers describe the visit as possibly the last time the masterpiece travels so far from home.

Why is Girl with a Pearl Earring so popular in Japan?

Japanese art lovers have long held a deep fascination for Vermeer's quiet, refined style, a taste that aligns with the Japanese aesthetic of stillness. A 2012 exhibition of the painting in Tokyo and Kobe drew 1.2 million visitors — nearly one in every 100 Japanese people — while an earlier Vermeer show in Osaka in 2000 attracted 600,000. Mauritshuis director Martine Gosselink, who travelled with the work, told NOS: “People want to touch me as soon as they hear I work at the Mauritshuis. That's how special this painting is. The Girl is seen here almost as something sacred.”

The current exhibition at Nakanoshima Museum of Art runs from 21 August to 27 September 2026 and is part of a showcase featuring twelve works from the Mauritshuis collection, including Vermeer's Diana and her Nymphs.

Long queues, lottery tickets and strict security

On the first day, fans waited for hours in summer heat before the museum opened. Demand was so intense that the online ticketing system overloaded during pre-sale, forcing organisers to switch from first-come-first-served to a lottery for timed-entry slots. No day tickets are available at the museum door.

Reiko Horikoshi of The Asahi Shimbun, co-organiser of the exhibition, said: “When we heard the work could only travel to one location, I wanted to bring it to Osaka. It's an exceptional chance to stand in front of the original.” She added that the painting is protected under the highest international security standards, though details remain confidential.

Princess Aiko's private viewing

Only Japan's Princess Aiko was allowed to skip the queue, receiving a brief private audience with the painting before the public opening. Her visit underscored the work's status in Japan, where it is sometimes called the “Dutch Mona Lisa.”

A wooden tribute and a merchandising boom

Near the museum, woodcarver Maeda has created a three-dimensional wooden version of the girl using traditional Japanese carving techniques. “I wanted to show the elusive quality of Vermeer's painting,” Maeda said. “But how do you express that in wood? I struggled enormously.”

Maeda first saw the original during a 2022 study trip to the Mauritshuis. “She has a certain presence you can't shake off,” he said. “Now people here get the chance to see this Dutch masterpiece. I think it will unleash a lot.”

Outside the gallery, the Vermeer merchandise craze extends to stacks of Miffy plush toys dressed as the girl, sweets, coffee cups, keychains, jackets and even paintings featuring Japanese animation characters wearing her clothes. Jeweller Mikimoto has produced three real versions of the possibly fictional pearl earring, the most expensive costing more than 100,000 euros.

What does the loan mean for Netherlands–Japan relations?

Dutch ambassador Gilles Beschoor-Plug, who attended the opening in Osaka, said: “The Netherlands is blessed with great artists who receive a lot of attention in Japan. That increases interest in the Netherlands and helps us enormously in our work here.”

Japan is a focus country within the Netherlands' international cultural policy. Heleen Bakker, director-general for European Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, added: “We bring artists from our countries together a lot. This is good for the reputation of the Netherlands, and we can build on that.”

The Mauritshuis renovation project that made the loan possible is expected to close the museum in August and September 2026, with the Girl returning to The Hague afterwards. Gosselink said she has no worries about the painting's safety: “She will certainly come back.”
