Italian Rescue Services Issue 'Urgent Warning' for Alpine Avalanche Danger
Italian alpine rescue services have issued an urgent warning for extreme avalanche danger in the Alps after 11 people died in mountain accidents within just one week. The dangerous conditions, caused by fresh snow falling on unstable older snow layers, have created what rescuers describe as a 'perfect storm' for avalanche risks across the Italian mountain range.
Deadly Week in the Mountains
The latest victim was a 70-year-old hiker found dead near Cortina d'Ampezzo, a region currently hosting events for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. The deadliest day was Saturday, when four people lost their lives in separate avalanche incidents in the Valtellina and Trentino regions.
'There are many dangerous points that are difficult to recognize from the ground,' said the CNSAS (Italian Alpine Rescue Service) in a statement to ANSA news agency. 'This makes it difficult even for experienced winter sports enthusiasts to find truly safe descent or climbing routes.'
Unstable Snow Conditions Create Perfect Storm
The rescue service explained that the current dangerous conditions result from fresh snow accumulating on older, unstable snow layers. This creates what avalanche experts call a 'persistent weak layer' that can fail suddenly when additional weight is added.
'Even a single skier's movement can trigger an avalanche under these conditions,' warned a CNSAS spokesperson. 'The unstable snow conditions span across most of the Alpine range from west to east, making it difficult even for expert off-piste skiers to identify safe routes.'
Safety Recommendations for Mountain Goers
The rescue service is advising climbers and skiers to carefully study avalanche bulletins, plan conservative routes, and avoid unprepared areas with slopes steeper than 30 degrees. They also recommend carrying standard avalanche safety equipment including transceivers, probes, and shovels.
The warning comes during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics period, raising concerns about safety for both athletes and spectators visiting the mountain regions. While Olympic venues have extensive safety measures in place, the surrounding backcountry areas remain extremely hazardous.
Broader Alpine Safety Concerns
This isn't an isolated incident in the Alps. Recent weeks have seen multiple avalanche fatalities across the mountain range, including eight skiers killed in Austria and two deaths in Slovakia. The pattern suggests widespread unstable snow conditions affecting the entire Alpine region.
Mountain safety experts emphasize that climate change may be contributing to more unpredictable snow conditions, with warmer temperatures creating more variable snow layers that increase avalanche risks.
