US Military Downs Iranian Drone Near Aircraft Carrier in Arabian Sea

The United States military has shot down an Iranian drone that was aggressively approaching the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations. According to U.S. Central Command, an Iranian Shahed-139 drone flew toward the carrier with 'unclear intent' while the ship was operating approximately 500 miles from Iran's southern coast in international waters.

After de-escalatory measures failed, an F-35 fighter jet from the Abraham Lincoln shot down the drone in what officials described as 'self-defense'. No U.S. personnel were harmed in the incident. The USS Abraham Lincoln is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that has been deployed to the Middle East since August 2024 as part of the U.S. response to escalating regional tensions.

Separate Incident in Strait of Hormuz

Hours after the drone incident, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps forces harassed a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian boats accompanied by a drone threatened to board and seize the vessel, the Stena Imperative, according to maritime security reports. The U.S. guided missile destroyer USS McFaul responded to escort the tanker to safety.

Maritime risk management company Vanguard confirmed the Stena Imperative was not in Iranian waters during the incident, though Iranian state media claimed otherwise. 'These continued harassments in international waters increase risks of collision, miscalculation, and regional destabilization,' warned a U.S. Central Command statement.

High-Stakes Nuclear Talks Scheduled

The incidents come as Iran and the United States are scheduled to hold nuclear talks on Friday in Istanbul. The meeting would mark the first such negotiations since the Trump administration bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in summer 2025. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has authorized negotiations with conditions that talks must occur in a threat-free environment.

The meeting is expected to include Iran's top diplomat Abbas Araghchi and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, with Jared Kushner, former President Trump's son-in-law, also expected to attend. Regional foreign ministers from Turkey, Qatar, and Egypt are also anticipated to participate.

However, Reuters reports that Iran wants to change the location from Istanbul to Oman and insists on discussing only nuclear matters, excluding Iran's ballistic missile program or support for regional militias like Hezbollah.

Trump's Demands and Regional Tensions

Former President Donald Trump has reportedly set three conditions for resuming talks: Iran must stop uranium enrichment, limit its ballistic missile program, and cease support for regional allies. While Iran initially rejected these demands, sources suggest Tehran might be more flexible on enrichment than missile restrictions.

'Iran would be willing to limit its nuclear program, but not to stop it completely,' an Iranian source told Reuters. The tensions have been building for months, with Trump threatening military intervention if Iran continues its harsh crackdown on civilian protests. Human rights organizations report over 6,000 deaths since protests began in late December.

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that any U.S. attack on Iran would risk triggering a regional war. The outcome of Friday's talks could have significant implications for Middle East stability and global security, with regional powers including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Israel closely monitoring developments.
