Beijing later restricted the use of some Boeing parts in response.
What the first international flight means for global aviation
The debut flight is a powerful symbol for China's ambitions but also echoes the broader Made in China 2025 import-substitution strategy. Western certification, particularly from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, could still take three to six years, according to experts. Until then, the C919 will likely remain confined to Asian routes.
Still, Sobie does not expect a full decoupling between Chinese and Western aviation. "This aircraft may contain a lot of Western technology, but Airbus and Boeing also import many components from China," he noted. For now, the C919's greatest advantage is China's vast domestic market, which handled 1.5 billion passenger movements last year.
