Major Evacuations Near Marseille

Over 400 residents were evacuated as wildfires reached the outskirts of Marseille, France. Marseille's mayor confirmed the evacuations to local media, with displaced residents finding temporary shelter in secondary schools.

Minister Visits Affected Area

French Interior Minister Retailleau visited the scene, noting no fatalities despite the fire's scale. However, he reported 110 minor injuries among firefighters and police officers. The minister described the blaze as "exceptionally fast" and "impressive," confirming it remains uncontrolled.

Emergency Response Efforts

More than 800 firefighters and 200 emergency vehicles are battling the flames that have consumed over 700 hectares. Strong winds accelerated the fire's spread into Marseille's 16th arrondissement, prompting authorities to advise 15,000 residents to stay indoors with windows and doors sealed.

Transportation Disruptions

Marseille Provence Airport suspended operations, diverting flights to Nice and Nîmes. Train services from Marseille to northern and western France were canceled. Airport officials anticipate partial service restoration tomorrow morning. The fire originated in Les Pennes-Mirabeau between the airport and city.

Additional Wildfire Near Narbonne

Meanwhile, 250km west of Marseille, a separate wildfire near Narbonne has destroyed 2,000 hectares of forest. This fire caused temporary closures on the A9 highway and movement restrictions for local residents.
