Deadly Blaze in Newly Opened Mall

A devastating fire at the Corniche Hypermarket Mall in Al-Kut, Iraq has claimed at least 60 lives with 11 people still missing. The inferno broke out in the shopping center that had been open for just five days. Most victims died from smoke inhalation according to local authorities.

Rescue Efforts and Identification Challenges

Firefighters managed to save 45 people, though many bodies remain unrecovered. Authorities report most victims have been identified, but severe burns make identification impossible for others. Witnesses reported neighbors assisted firefighters due to insufficient emergency vehicles.

Investigation Points to Cosmetics Section

Initial police reports suggest the fire originated on the floor selling perfumes and cosmetics. The Wasit Province governor announced investigations are underway with results expected within 48 hours. Legal action will be taken against the mall owner and building management.

National Mourning Declared

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered the Interior Minister to investigate and prevent future tragedies. The government declared three days of national mourning. Survivor Abdul Redha Thahab lost neighbors including a family of six, while Moataz Karim identified relatives including a cousin who recently started working there.
