Massacre in Eastern Congo Claims 66 Lives

In a brutal overnight assault, Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants killed 66 civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Irumu region bordering Uganda. The attackers used machetes and firearms during the Thursday-Friday night raid, leaving victims with severe mutilations. Several hostages were taken during the violence.

UN Confirms Bloodbath

A United Nations mission spokesperson described the incident as a massacre. Initial reports indicated 31 fatalities, but the death toll later rose to 66. The ADF, designated as a terrorist organization by Uganda and the US, has pledged allegiance to Islamic State since 2018.

Retaliation for Military Operations

Analysts suggest the attack may be retaliation for recent joint Congolese-Ugandan military operations against ADF strongholds launched the previous Sunday. Founded in Uganda during the 1990s, the ADF primarily operates in Congo's North Kivu province, where it has established recruitment networks despite repeated counterinsurgency efforts.

Escalating Regional Violence

Human rights organizations report hundreds killed and abducted in recent ADF attacks along the Congo-Uganda border, with children comprising many victims. Last month, the group killed 42 people - mostly children - in a Ugandan school attack where dormitories were set ablaze and victims hacked with machetes. Twenty suspects with ADF ties were subsequently arrested.
