Autonomous Buses Hit Singapore Roads

Singapore has launched its first fully autonomous public bus service, marking a major leap in urban transportation. The driverless buses began operating today along a 13-kilometer route in Punggol, connecting residential areas with key amenities and transport hubs.

Tech-Powered Transport Revolution

The electric buses feature LiDAR sensors, 360-degree cameras, and AI navigation systems that process real-time traffic data. They can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and obstacles up to 200 meters away. Each vehicle accommodates 40 passengers with wheelchair spaces and USB charging ports.

Safety First Approach

During the initial phase, safety operators will monitor operations remotely. The buses maintain a maximum speed of 40km/h and include emergency stop buttons. Transport Minister Chan Chun Sing stated: "This pilot program demonstrates our commitment to smart mobility solutions that enhance commuter experience while reducing carbon footprint."

Future Expansion Plans

If successful, the Land Transport Authority will expand the autonomous network to cover 5 more towns by 2026. The government has allocated S$50 million to develop supporting infrastructure including smart traffic signals and dedicated lanes.

Public Response

Early commuters reported smooth rides, with retiree Tan Wei Ling noting: "It felt safer than regular buses during heavy rain." The service operates 7am-10pm daily with 10-minute frequencies during peak hours.
