Worldwide Service Disruption

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service experienced a major global outage lasting approximately 2.5 hours. The disruption began at 22:00 GMT and was largely resolved by 00:35 GMT. According to the company, the failure originated from "outages of critical internal software services operating the core network."

System Architecture

Starlink operates through thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), enabling high-speed internet connectivity without traditional wired infrastructure. This constellation design provides crucial coverage in remote areas where conventional internet access is unavailable.

Critical Applications

The service disruption affected key operations globally. Ukraine's military relies extensively on Starlink for battlefield communications in its conflict with Russia. Additionally, numerous airlines utilize the system for in-flight passenger internet services.

Growing Infrastructure

As of May 2025, Starlink's constellation consists of over 7,600 satellites, representing 65% of all active satellites orbiting Earth. SpaceX projects further expansion to nearly 12,000 units with potential growth to 34,400 satellites long-term.

Financial and Strategic Importance

Starlink has become financially significant for SpaceX, with 2025 revenues projected at $11.8 billion. The U.S. Department of Defense contracts Starlink for military applications through its Starshield program. The system's architecture includes collision-avoidance technology using Hall-effect thrusters for orbital adjustments.
