Russia Expands Nuclear Base in Kaliningrad

Satellite images obtained by Swedish broadcaster SVT reveal significant expansions and modernizations at five Russian nuclear facilities near Europe over recent years. The images highlight new structures, triple fencing, and advanced communication equipment at the military base in Kaliningrad, a Russian exclave on the Baltic Sea. This base is suspected to store tactical nuclear warheads, with Polish estimates suggesting around 100 warheads may be housed there.

Renovations in Belarus

Similar upgrades are underway at the Osipovichi base in Belarus, where Russia is renovating its nuclear storage facilities. New rail transport loading platforms and air defense systems have also been installed, signaling a broader strategic push.

Novaya Zemlya and Kola Peninsula

Additional developments include new buildings at the Novaya Zemlya base, a key site for Russian nuclear tests, and the construction of 50 storage bunkers for submarine-launched ballistic missiles on the Kola Peninsula. A specialized pier for loading missiles onto submarines has also been built.

International Response

Swedish Defense Minister Pål Jonson confirmed that Stockholm is closely monitoring Russia's nuclear capabilities. "We are aware of these developments and have been tracking them for some time," Jonson stated, referencing both Russia's nuclear investments and its evolving military doctrine.
