China staged its most massive military parade in history on September 3, 2025, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia. Global Leaders Witness Military Demonstration

Chinese President Xi Jinping was flanked by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the reviewing stand, sending a powerful geopolitical message about emerging alliances. The absence of Western leaders was notable, with nearly thirty foreign heads of state attending, including Belarusian President Lukashenko and Indonesian President Prabowo who made a surprise appearance despite earlier cancellation due to domestic unrest.

Advanced Weapons Systems Unveiled

The parade showcased China's latest military technology, including hypersonic missiles, underwater drones, advanced sensors, and laser systems. Military analysts noted that these weapons represent China's focus on winning modern warfare through technological superiority rather than sheer numbers. The People's Liberation Army presented these systems as decisive factors in future conflicts.

New Military Branches Debut

Four new military branches made their public debut: cyber forces, information warfare troops, logistics units, and space operations forces. These additions to China's traditional land, air, naval, and rocket forces place digital attacks, intelligence warfare, satellite operations, and advanced logistics directly under Xi's command through the Central Military Commission.

Modernization Strategy and Purges

China's military modernization follows a three-step plan announced in 2017. By 2027, the PLA aims to become a modern, technologically advanced regional force. By 2035, complete modernization with integrated cyber, space, and AI capabilities is targeted. By 2049, China intends to possess a world-class military among the strongest globally.

Recent purges within the PLA leadership, including two defense ministers and 45 senior officials according to Jamestown Foundation research, demonstrate Xi's firm control over military affairs. The reasons for these dismissals remain largely undisclosed to the public.
