Major Funding Boost for Renewable Hydrogen Projects
An international consortium has committed nearly €1 billion to accelerate the development of large-scale green hydrogen production facilities across Europe. The funding, announced on May 20, 2025, will support 15 innovative projects selected through the European Commission's Hydrogen Innovation Fund.
Scaling Clean Energy Solutions
The funded projects focus on electrolysis technology powered exclusively by renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Green hydrogen production involves splitting water molecules using electricity generated from clean sources, resulting in zero carbon emissions. This positions it as a critical solution for decarbonizing heavy industries such as steel manufacturing, chemical production, and long-haul transportation.
Strategic Industrial Applications
Selected initiatives include:
- A 500MW electrolyzer plant in Rotterdam integrating offshore wind power
- Hydrogen valley development in northern Spain combining solar farms with storage infrastructure
- Innovative ship propulsion systems using liquid hydrogen bunkering in Mediterranean ports
- Steel production pilot replacing coking coal with hydrogen in Sweden
Cost Reduction Milestones
Green hydrogen production costs have decreased dramatically from being 25 times more expensive than fossil-based hydrogen in 2018 to just 3 times more expensive in 2024. This funding aims to further close the price gap through scaled manufacturing and technological improvements. The consortium includes industry leaders like Siemens Energy, Iberdrola, and Ørsted, alongside research institutions.
European Green Deal Alignment
This initiative supports the EU's REPowerEU plan targeting 10 million tonnes of domestic renewable hydrogen production annually by 2030. Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson stated: "These projects will position Europe at the forefront of clean hydrogen technology while creating approximately 15,000 high-skilled jobs." The first facilities are expected to become operational by 2027.
