Massive Manhunt for Sovereign Citizen Fugitive

Australian authorities in Victoria have announced a record-breaking $1 million AUD (€500,000) reward for information leading to the capture of Dezi Freeman, a 59-year-old sovereign citizen who shot and killed two police officers eleven days ago. The incident occurred when officers served a search warrant at Freeman's residence in the rural town of Porepunkah.

Violent Confrontation and Escape

During the confrontation on August 26, 2025, Freeman opened fire on the responding officers, killing two and seriously wounding a third before fleeing on foot into the surrounding wilderness. The fugitive, described as having extensive survival skills in the Australian outback, has evaded capture despite a massive manhunt involving over 450 police officers.

Sovereign Citizen Movement

Freeman is reportedly part of the sovereign citizen movement, individuals who reject government authority and often believe they are not subject to laws. While authorities haven't confirmed whether his beliefs motivated the attack, the case highlights growing concerns about anti-government extremism in Australia.

Unprecedented Reward

Victoria Police Commissioner Shane Patton stated, "This reward amount demonstrates the seriousness of this violence and our determination to find him so there is no further danger to the community." The reward is the highest ever offered in Victoria state history.

Rare Firearm Violence

Gun violence remains rare in Australia following strict firearm reforms implemented after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre that killed 35 people. The last police officer fatally shot in Australia was in 2023, making this incident particularly shocking to the nation.

Authorities warn that Freeman is considered armed and dangerous and urge the public not to approach him but to immediately contact emergency services if spotted.
