Deadly Ambush in Rural Victoria

Two Victoria Police officers were killed and a third seriously injured in a brutal ambush shooting in the rural town of Porepunkah, approximately 300 kilometers northeast of Melbourne. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a team of ten officers arrived at a property on Rayner Track to execute a warrant related to historical sex offences.

Sovereign Citizen Suspect Identified

The alleged shooter, identified as Dezi Freeman, 56, is believed to be a self-proclaimed sovereign citizen who had been living on a bus on the property. Sovereign citizens are anti-government activists who believe they are not subject to government laws and regulations. Freeman had previously referred to police as "gestapo" and "corrupt filth" in court proceedings.

Massive Manhunt Underway

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed the shooter remains at large and a significant search operation is actively underway. Tactical teams, dog squads, and armoured vehicles have been deployed to the area. Police helicopters equipped with thermal imaging technology are assisting in the search efforts.

Community in Lockdown

The local community has been instructed to stay indoors and avoid the area. Porepunkah Primary School was placed in lockdown for several hours before students were allowed to return home. Local businesses, including the Porepunkah Pub, have closed following police advice. Alpine Health services have restricted access to facilities in Bright and Porepunkah.

National Outpouring of Support

Police associations across Australia have expressed solidarity with Victoria Police. The Queensland Police Union president noted similarities to the 2022 Wieambilla shootings where two officers were murdered. New South Wales Police offered heartfelt condolences, stating their thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen officers.

Historical Context of Australian Gun Laws

Australia implemented some of the world's strictest gun control measures following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, where 35 people were killed. The National Firearms Agreement introduced comprehensive reforms including firearm registration, licensing requirements, and restrictions on certain types of weapons. Despite these measures, incidents involving illegal firearms continue to occur.
