Australian authorities are investigating a heartbreaking incident where an 80-year-old woman was left behind by the Coral Adventurer cruise ship on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef and later found deceased. The tragic event unfolded on Saturday when the elderly Australian passenger joined a group hike to Cook's Look, the island's highest peak, but decided to rest while others continued.

Search and Rescue Operation Launched

The Coral Adventurer departed Lizard Island around sunset between 6-7pm local time, but the crew only realized the woman was missing around midnight. 'We knew she was dead because they called everyone back from the search immediately,' said Traci Ayris, who was sailing near the island and witnessed the search operation. 'And no-one went to the spot that the chopper was hovering over until later that day when the police arrived.'

A major search operation involving helicopters using spotlights and ground crews with torches was launched. Ayris described seeing about seven people with torches searching the island trails around midnight, but the operation was called off at approximately 3:00am local time. The search resumed on Sunday morning, and the woman's body was discovered around 9:30am.

Official Investigations Underway

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) confirmed it was first alerted to the missing woman at around 21:00 local time on Saturday by the ship's captain. AMSA stated it is investigating the incident and will meet with the ship's crew when the Coral Adventurer docks in Darwin later this week. The authority emphasized that it takes passenger and crew safety seriously and will work with other relevant agencies.

Coral Expeditions chief executive Mark Fifield expressed deep sorrow over the incident. 'While investigations into the incident are continuing, we are deeply sorry that this has occurred and are offering our full support to the woman's family,' Fifield stated. The company has contacted the woman's family and is providing support during this difficult time.

About the Cruise and Location

The woman was on the first stop of a 60-day cruise around Australia, with tickets reportedly costing tens of thousands of dollars for the journey. The Coral Adventurer, according to the company's website, caters for up to 120 guests with 46 crew members and was purpose-built to access remote areas of Australia's coast.

Lizard Island is located approximately 250 km (155 miles) north of Cairns in Queensland and is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island is known for its pristine beaches, coral reefs, and popular hiking trails, including the challenging walk to Cook's Look that offers panoramic views of the surrounding reef.

Queensland police confirmed they are treating the death as sudden and non-suspicious, with a report being prepared for the coroner. The incident has raised questions about passenger safety protocols and headcount procedures on expedition cruise ships operating in remote locations.

Ayris reflected on the tragedy, saying 'It was very sad in this paradise to have this tragedy occur. It should have been a happy time for that lovely lady.' The investigation continues as authorities work to determine exactly how the passenger was left behind and what safety improvements might be needed for future cruise operations in Australia's remote coastal regions.
