The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with over 52,000 people reportedly killed and 118,000 injured since the conflict escalated in October 2023. The situation has worsened due to a near-total blockade on aid, leaving 470,000 people—22% of the population—facing starvation. The healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with 90% of the population displaced and living in dire conditions.
Aid Efforts and Challenges
Organizations like the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) are working tirelessly to provide aid, but their efforts are hampered by the blockade. Over 1,600 PRCS staff and volunteers have distributed 1.6 million emergency relief items and provided medical support to 100,000 people. However, supplies are critically low, and without immediate access, the crisis will deepen.
Healthcare Collapse
Gaza’s healthcare system is near collapse, with 47% of hospital medications and 70% of primary care medications unavailable. The Red Cross field hospital in Rafah has treated over 80,240 patients, but the lack of supplies threatens its operations. Infectious diseases are spreading rapidly due to overcrowded shelters and contaminated water.
Call for International Support
The British Red Cross and other organizations are calling for urgent international aid to prevent further loss of life. Donations to the Gaza Crisis Appeal are critical to sustaining relief efforts.
