The State of Global Civil Conflicts in 2025

Major Ongoing Civil Wars

The world continues to grapple with numerous civil conflicts that have created devastating humanitarian crises. According to conflict monitoring organizations, several major wars are currently causing significant casualties and displacement.

The Myanmar civil war, which began following the 2021 military coup, has intensified throughout 2025. "The situation in Myanmar has deteriorated dramatically, with civilian casualties reaching alarming levels and millions displaced from their homes," reports a UN humanitarian official. The conflict involves the military junta fighting against various ethnic armed organizations and pro-democracy forces.

Sudan's Devastating Conflict

In Sudan, the civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group has created one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters. "We're witnessing a complete collapse of basic services and infrastructure across Sudan," says an aid worker with Doctors Without Borders. The conflict has displaced over 8 million people internally and forced millions more to flee to neighboring countries.

Ukraine's Continued Struggle

While not a traditional civil war, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has created internal displacement and humanitarian challenges on a massive scale. The conflict continues to impact civilian populations with ongoing shelling and attacks on infrastructure.

Ethiopia's Fragile Peace

In Ethiopia, the Tigray conflict that officially ended in 2022 has left deep scars and ongoing tensions. Despite the peace agreement, humanitarian needs remain enormous with millions requiring food assistance and basic services.

Yemen's Protracted Crisis

The Yemen civil war, though experiencing reduced intensity in some areas, continues to create one of the world's worst humanitarian emergencies. "Yemen remains a country on the brink, with widespread malnutrition and a healthcare system that has essentially collapsed," notes a UNICEF representative.

Humanitarian Impact

These conflicts have collectively created unprecedented humanitarian challenges. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 300 million people worldwide need humanitarian assistance, with conflict being the primary driver of this need.

Civilian protection remains a major concern across all conflict zones, with reports of human rights violations, sexual violence, and attacks on humanitarian workers becoming increasingly common.

International Response

The international community continues to struggle with adequate response mechanisms. Funding shortfalls for humanitarian operations are chronic, and access constraints often prevent aid from reaching those most in need.

Peace processes remain fragile or non-existent in many of these conflicts, with diplomatic efforts often hampered by geopolitical considerations and competing interests.
