Raising Awareness on Personal Data Rights

Organizations worldwide are hosting workshops and events for Data Privacy Day 2025, focusing on educating individuals about their personal data rights. This annual observance on January 28 commemorates the 1981 signing of Convention 108 - the first international treaty on privacy and data protection.

Hands-On Learning Opportunities

Clemson University is offering free 15-minute smartphone privacy clinics where participants learn to control data collection through practical settings adjustments. Theo Wills, Clemson's Chief Privacy Officer, emphasizes: "When you implement data privacy practices required by policies, you gain dual benefits by applying these principles to personal information management."

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) is hosting the webinar "Navigating Privacy in AI," exploring how artificial intelligence impacts data protection. Participants will examine emerging technologies and regulatory frameworks shaping privacy in machine learning systems.

Why Privacy Matters Today

With data breaches increasing 15% year-over-year and new regulations like the EU AI Act taking effect, privacy awareness has never been more critical. Studies show that 78% of consumers worry about their online privacy but only 32% regularly review app permissions.

"Privacy isn't dead - it's being reincarnated," says Wills, who will deliver Clemson's keynote address "Privacy Matters: Make It Personal." The session will examine how workplace privacy principles translate to personal data habits and discuss emerging threats in biometric data collection.

Global Participation Growing

Data Privacy Day, known as Data Protection Day in Europe, is now observed in over 50 countries. Participating organizations include:

  • Federal Trade Commission (FTC) virtual panels
  • Identity Theft Council resource fairs
  • Carnegie Mellon University privacy labs
  • Data Security Council of India workshops

The IAPP's global directory lists 380+ events, reflecting 40% growth from 2024. Resources from all events will be available on StaySafeOnline.org after January 28.
