Historic Decision on Street Renaming

Braunau am Inn has taken decisive action following a comprehensive historical review of street names linked to the National Socialist era. The city council voted 28-9 on July 2, 2025, to rename Franz Resl-Straße and Josef Reiter-Straße after a year-long examination process.

Research and Findings

A scientific study commissioned by the city focused specifically on the Nazi period (1933-1945). Presented to the council in December 2024, the report identified several streets honoring individuals with documented Nazi affiliations or sympathies. Josef Reiter (1862-1939), a composer who received honorary citizenship in 1922, was found to have maintained associations with Nazi ideology. Franz Resl (1883-1954), though less prominently documented, was also implicated through archival evidence.

Phased Implementation

The renaming process began in March 2025 with the revocation of honorary citizenships from Reiter and Eduard Kriechbaum. Resident consultations followed, including a town hall meeting on May 13 where affected homeowners voiced practical concerns about address changes. The culture and finance committees will now determine compensation for residents and select replacement names honoring victims of Nazi persecution.

Mayoral Statement

Mayor Mag. Waidbacher acknowledged the decision's sensitivity: "There are always pros and cons on such issues. I'm relieved we've reached clarity." The move aligns with Austria's broader Vergangenheitsbewältigung (coming to terms with the past) efforts.
