California Sues Trump Over Deployment of National Guard Against Protests

The US state of California is suing President Trump over his deployment of the National Guard to counter protests in Los Angeles. Governor Gavin Newsom argues that Trump's actions are aimed at "creating a crisis."

While the announced 2,000 guardsmen have not yet arrived, Trump has reportedly sent 700 Marines in the meantime. Meanwhile, the city's police report that protester violence is escalating.

The police have issued a city-wide curfew for downtown LA, expanding from previous restrictions on specific demonstration areas. Concerns about unrest persist on the fourth day of protests against mass arrests and deportations of immigrants.

Sunday night saw renewed chaos, including self-driving cars set ablaze, officers targeted with projectiles, and looting incidents. Police deployed tear gas, rubber bullets, and flashbangs. Ten arrests were made on Sunday, following 29 on Saturday.

Trump defended his decision on Truth Social, claiming LA would have been "completely destroyed" without the National Guard. He also hinted at arresting Newsom for obstructing immigration measures.

The UN has urged against further militarization, advocating for local, state, and federal cooperation to resolve the situation.
