Trump's New Visa Rules Create Panic Among Indian Professionals

President Donald Trump's administration has announced a dramatic increase in H-1B visa fees to $100,000, sending shockwaves through India's technology and scientific communities. The move comes just days after Trump's birthday call to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the complex relationship between the two nations.

American Dreams Deferred

The H-1B visa program has long been the gateway for ambitious Indian professionals seeking opportunities in Silicon Valley and American research institutions. Last year, more than 70% of the 85,000 H-1B visas issued went to Indian nationals, making this policy change particularly impactful.

"I have advised him not to go. The US under Trump has become too uncertain," says Professor Sajesh Thomas of the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, referring to a panicked PhD student about to depart for America.

Flight Chaos and Corporate Response

The announcement created immediate chaos, with Indian professionals scrambling to return to the US before the September 21 midnight deadline. Major corporations including JPMorgan and Microsoft advised employees not to leave the country or return immediately to avoid potential six-figure fees.

The confusion led to panic on flights from the US to India, with passengers attempting to disembark to avoid massive financial liabilities upon return.

Shifting Migration Patterns

Tech consultant Faisal Kawoosa explains the historical context: "In the 1990s, American companies came to India en masse. For local Indian workers, it became a dream to eventually be recruited for headquarters."

However, younger generations are reconsidering their options. Sameeksha, a 17-year-old student at IIT Delhi, notes: "A generation before us aimed for America, but now the UK or Germany seem much better options."

Political Fallout and Self-Reliance

The timing of the announcement, following Trump's friendly call with Modi, drew criticism from Indian opposition leaders. Rahul Gandhi called Modi a "weak leader" on social media platform X, questioning the value of the leaders' relationship.

Modi responded by emphasizing self-reliance, stating: "Our only enemy is dependence on another country," while announcing tax reforms aimed at reducing prices of daily necessities during India's festive season.

According to Wikipedia, the H-1B program allows US employers to hire foreign workers in specialty occupations, with an annual cap of 85,000 visas. The program has been controversial, with debates about its impact on American workers and innovation.
