Chinese Authorities Sentence Citizen Journalist to Four More Years

Zhang Zhan, the Chinese citizen journalist who gained international recognition for her courageous reporting from Wuhan during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been sentenced to another four years in prison. The 42-year-old former lawyer was convicted on charges of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble" - a charge frequently used by Chinese authorities to silence dissent.

International Outcry Over Persecution

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) confirmed the sentencing, stating that Zhang's arrest was directly related to her social media reporting about the intimidation of human rights activists. "She should be celebrated worldwide as an information heroine, not locked up in cruel prison conditions," said an RSF spokesperson.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also condemned the verdict, calling it "nothing more than outright persecution for her journalistic work." Zhang had previously served a four-year sentence for her Wuhan reporting before being briefly released in May 2024.

Wuhan Reporting That Cost Freedom

In February 2020, Zhang traveled from Shanghai to Wuhan to document the unfolding pandemic crisis. Her videos showed overwhelmed hospitals, empty streets, and crematoriums operating around the clock - images that contradicted official narratives about the pandemic being under control.

Her reporting provided crucial early documentation of what would become a global health crisis that claimed millions of lives worldwide according to WHO estimates.

Hunger Strike and Force-Feeding

During her previous imprisonment, Zhang went on hunger strike to protest her detention. Prison authorities reportedly force-fed her through a nasal tube and kept her shackled for days at a time. Her health deteriorated significantly during captivity, with hospitalization required in 2021 due to severe malnutrition.

Despite completing her initial sentence in 2024, Zhang was re-arrested in August 2024 on similar charges, demonstrating China's continuing crackdown on independent journalism and free speech.
