Nationwide Demonstrations Paralyze France

France witnessed massive protests across the country on Thursday as thousands took to the streets to oppose President Emmanuel Macron's controversial austerity measures. The demonstrations, organized by united trade unions, brought major cities to a standstill with authorities expecting up to 800,000 participants nationwide.

Violent Clashes and Arrests

In Paris and Marseille, protesters clashed with police who deployed tear gas to disperse crowds. Dozens of arrests were made by mid-morning as tensions escalated. "We're fighting for our future and against policies that only benefit the wealthy," said one demonstrator in Reims, where protesters gathered despite heavy police presence.

Transportation and Services Disrupted

The nationwide strike severely impacted public transportation, with metro services in Paris experiencing significant disruptions. Nearly all pharmacies remained closed, while businesses and schools faced blockades by demonstrators. The 'Opération escargot' (snail operation) saw vehicles driving at walking pace on major highways, creating massive traffic jams.

Political Crisis Deepens

The protests come amid France's deepening political crisis. Last week, Prime Minister François Bayrou resigned after failing to secure parliamentary support for the austerity package. Macron subsequently appointed 39-year-old Sébastien Lecornu as the fifth prime minister in less than two years.

Protesters remain skeptical about Lecornu's ability to change course. The proposed €43.8 billion budget cuts target social benefits and healthcare while maintaining corporate subsidies, a move critics say will widen the gap between rich and poor. According to Wikipedia, the 'Bloquons tout' movement has gained momentum since mid-2025, organizing through social media platforms.

France's state finances face unsustainable pressure, with the government struggling to balance economic stability with social welfare demands. The continued protests signal growing public discontent that could shape the country's political landscape for years to come.
