Major Funding Boost for Public Transport

The US infrastructure plan has prioritized urban mobility with a significant $250 million allocation through the Transportation Alternatives (TA) program. Announced by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) on January 3, 2025, this funding targets bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure projects across all communities.

Two-Step Application Process

Project sponsors must complete preliminary applications by March 30 to determine eligibility, followed by detailed proposals due June 20. TxDOT's innovative two-step approach aims to improve application quality and foster collaboration between local governments and district staff. The funds come from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) signed in 2021.

Statewide Impact

Unlike previous cycles limiting projects to areas under 200,000 residents, this funding is available statewide. Eligible projects include bike lanes, pedestrian bridges, rapid-flashing beacons, and active transportation planning. "This transforms how Texans move," stated TxDOT Director Emily Sanchez. "We're building safer alternatives to cars while reducing congestion."

Implementation Timeline

Selected projects will receive FY2027-2029 funding, with technical workshops scheduled throughout May. The program expands on 2023's successful TA initiative that funded 78 community projects. Nationwide, the IIJA has allocated $1.2 trillion for infrastructure modernization since its passage.
