UN Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan

The United Nations Security Council has issued a pressing call for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan, as the country grapples with a devastating civil war that has led to widespread famine, displacement, and loss of life. The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has escalated into one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Humanitarian Catastrophe

With over 8.8 million people internally displaced and more than 3.5 million fleeing as refugees, Sudan faces extreme shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has confirmed famine conditions in parts of North Darfur, with an estimated 522,000 children dead from starvation alone.

International Response

The UN Security Council, in a statement released on March 5, 2025, urged all parties to adhere to the Jeddah Declaration and engage in good-faith negotiations. The African Union and UN Secretary-General have also called for a ceasefire during Ramadan to allow humanitarian aid to reach affected populations.

Regional and Global Implications

The conflict has drawn international concern, with accusations of genocide against the RSF and its allied militias. Foreign involvement, including arms shipments from countries like China, Russia, and the UAE, has further complicated the situation. The UN has emphasized the need for a civilian-led transitional government to restore stability.
