Walmart Recalls 850,000 Water Bottles Following Serious Injuries

Walmart has issued an immediate recall of approximately 850,000 Ozark Trail stainless steel water bottles after reports of severe facial injuries, including two cases of permanent partial blindness. The incidents occurred when the bottles' caps explosively detached due to pressure buildup.

Injury Details and Product Defect

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the 64oz insulated bottles pose serious laceration and impact hazards when used with carbonated beverages, perishable liquids like juice or milk, or food items. Pressure buildup causes the caps to detach with enough force to cause traumatic eye injuries. Three injury reports have been confirmed, with two victims suffering permanent vision loss in one eye.

Recall Instructions and Consumer Response

The affected products were sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide since 2017. Consumers should immediately stop using the bottles and return them to any Walmart location for a full refund. Walmart has established a dedicated recall hotline (800-925-6278) and website for assistance. "Customer health and safety remains our top priority," a Walmart representative stated.

Product Safety Standards and Regulations

This recall follows standard CPSC protocols where manufacturers must:

  1. Identify affected product batches
  2. Notify regulatory authorities
  3. Implement consumer notification systems
  4. Provide remediation options

Product recalls aim to limit corporate liability while protecting consumers from defective goods. Recent years have seen increased scrutiny on container pressure safety standards following similar incidents with carbonated beverages.
