While physical decline is often associated with old age, research shows it begins much earlier than expected. Simple activities like walking become slightly more challenging each year after your mid-20s.

A study by the University of the Netherlands indicates that bodily decline starts around age 25. Eline van der Kruk, a biomechanical engineer at TU Delft, explains the physiological changes that occur from this age onward.

Muscles and bones weaken gradually after 30, with bone density decreasing and muscle mass reducing by about 5% annually. Additionally, the nervous system undergoes changes—hearing declines from the 20s, and balance deteriorates around 25, affecting coordination.

These shifts lead to subtle alterations in movement, such as shorter strides, a wider stance, and slower walking. These adaptations help prevent falls, a critical concern as we age.
