Poland Announces Temporary Border Measures

Poland will implement temporary border controls with Germany and Lithuania starting Monday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced today. This decision follows similar measures recently adopted by Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands to combat illegal migration.

Response to German Migration Policy

The Polish measures are primarily a reaction to Germany's extended border controls, where undocumented migrants are being returned to Poland. Germany recently extended its border controls for another six months. Prime Minister Tusk expressed frustration with this policy, stating: "We deem the temporary reintroduction of border controls necessary to minimize the uncontrolled influx of migrants across the Polish-German border." He added that "Polish patience is running out" due to increased pressure on Poland.

Schengen Agreement Context

These controls are permitted under the Schengen Agreement, which allows temporary border measures under specific circumstances. German Chancellor Merz affirmed Germany's commitment to maintaining the Schengen system but emphasized it cannot be abused by human traffickers. Merz stated that Germany and Poland have "a joint problem that we want to solve together."

Lithuanian Border and Reactions

The new controls will also affect Poland's border with Lithuania. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys confirmed being informed about the measures, commenting: "We must see which measures are most effective. They should not harm our common interest in free movement of persons and should contribute to protecting the EU's and NATO's external borders."

Domestic Political Pressures

The border issue has intensified political tensions within Poland. In recent weeks, right-wing activists independently conducted border checks along the German frontier. Some right-wing circles accused Polish border guards of collaborating with German authorities to accept migrants into Poland. Tusk criticized politicians exploiting the border situation for political gain, positioning himself as implementing stricter migration policies than his predecessor, including controversial measures allowing Poland to suspend asylum rights in certain situations.
