Trump Shares NATO Chief's Private Messages on Truth Social

President Donald Trump has once again shared private communications from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on his Truth Social platform, revealing the Dutch leader's praise for Trump's diplomatic efforts while highlighting ongoing tensions over Greenland. The leaked message shows Rutte complimenting Trump's achievements in Syria and promising to advocate for his peace initiatives during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

'Dear Donald, what you achieved today in Syria is incredible,' Rutte wrote in the message Trump shared. 'Thank you Mark Rutte, Secretary General of NATO!' Trump added in his post.

The timing of Rutte's message appears connected to Sunday's announcement of a ceasefire between Syrian government forces and Kurdish SDF militants, where the U.S. played a significant mediating role. NATO has not confirmed the authenticity of the message.

Greenland Takes Center Stage at Davos

In the leaked correspondence, Rutte specifically mentions Greenland, writing: 'I will also work to find a way forward on Greenland. I can't wait to see you.' This comes as world leaders gather in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual World Economic Forum, where Greenland has become a central topic of discussion.

Trump confirmed his continued interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, stating: 'We have to talk about it. They have to do this. They can't protect it, Denmark, they're great people,' he said. 'I know the leaders, they're very good people, but they don't even go there.'

This marks the second time Trump has shared private messages from Rutte. During last summer's NATO summit in the Netherlands, Trump posted a screenshot where Rutte praised Trump's success in getting all NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP.

Macron Also Drawn Into Controversy

Trump didn't stop with Rutte's messages. He also shared a private message from French President Emmanuel Macron, who wrote: 'I don't understand what you're doing with Greenland.' Macron proposed meeting Trump in Paris after Davos for dinner before his return to the U.S.

The French president has reportedly been skeptical about joining Trump's proposed Peace Council for Gaza. Trump responded with characteristic bluntness: 'If he acts hostile I'll put a 200 percent levy on his wines and champagnes. Then he'll join,' he threatened.

Historical Context of U.S.-Greenland Relations

The United States has a long history of interest in Greenland, dating back to the 19th century. Following the 1867 Alaska purchase, Secretary of State William H. Seward considered buying Greenland and Iceland from Denmark. In 1946, President Harry Truman secretly offered Denmark $100 million in gold for Greenland, citing Cold War national security concerns, but was refused.

The current Greenland crisis began in January 2025 during Trump's second term, triggering what analysts describe as the greatest transatlantic crisis in generations. Denmark has repeatedly stated Greenland is not for sale, with Greenlandic and Danish leaders organizing protests under the slogan 'Greenland is not for sale.'

As the 2026 World Economic Forum continues with over 60 heads of state in attendance, the leaked messages reveal the delicate diplomacy occurring behind the scenes. Rutte's commitment to 'find a way forward on Greenland' suggests ongoing negotiations, while Trump's public sharing of private communications continues his pattern of unconventional diplomacy that has characterized his presidency.
