A Russian fighter jet has violated NATO airspace near Estonia, according to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. The incident occurred as Russia sought to assist an oil tanker that Estonia intended to seize for investigation.

The tanker is suspected to be part of Russia's 'shadow fleet,' which consists of unregistered vessels used to circumvent international sanctions. 'The Russian Federation sent a fighter jet to assess the situation,' Tsahkna stated.

The minister described the situation as 'very serious,' noting that the Russian aircraft remained in Estonian airspace for at least a minute, thereby also violating NATO airspace. This incident underscores Russia's support for the shadow fleet, prompting calls for additional sanctions.

The violation occurred yesterday, leading Tsahkna to summon the Russian ambassador in Estonia over the 'unacceptable' incident.
