The Trump administration is reportedly considering withdrawing thousands of US troops from South Korea, according to sources from the Wall Street Journal. The Pentagon plans to relocate around 4,500 troops to other locations in the Indo-Pacific region. However, President Trump has not formally reviewed the proposal yet.

The US military currently maintains approximately 28,500 troops in South Korea. Trump previously aimed to reduce this number during his first term and even improved relations with North Korea, becoming the first sitting US president to step onto North Korean soil. However, tensions between the US and North Korea have since deteriorated.

The US presence in the region serves as a deterrent against North Korea and China, which is crucial for allies like South Korea and Japan. South Korea’s Defense Ministry denies any ongoing discussions with the US about reducing troop numbers.

According to sources, a final decision on withdrawal will depend on developments in the Ukraine war, where North Korean troops are reportedly fighting alongside Russian forces.
