Due to climate change, the record temperatures of recent years are likely to occur more frequently in the next five years. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports this in a new study. It is almost certain that the average temperature will remain roughly as high until 2029. It is also likely that the heat record will be broken at least once.

The WMO, the meteorological organization of the United Nations, says there is an 80 percent chance that the record year 2024 will be matched as the hottest year in the next five years. Moreover, there is an 86 percent chance that at least one of those years will again exceed the 1.5-degree warming threshold.

"We have just experienced the ten warmest years on record. Unfortunately, this WMO report shows no signs of a break in the coming years," says WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett. "This means there will be an increasing negative impact on our economies, daily lives, ecosystems, and our planet in the coming years."
