Emergency Measures Against Air Pollution

Geneva authorities have implemented free public transportation services citywide after dangerous ozone levels were detected. This emergency measure aims to reduce traffic emissions during an intense heatwave with temperatures exceeding 37°C.

Ozone Threshold Exceeded

Air quality monitors recorded ozone concentrations above the EU safety limit of 180 micrograms per cubic meter. This photochemical smog forms when nitrogen oxides from vehicles react with sunlight during high temperatures.

Health Recommendations Issued

Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities to morning hours when ozone levels are lowest. The environmental agency also recommends avoiding smoking and contact lens use during peak pollution periods.

Traffic Restrictions Enforced

Polluting vehicles without environmental certification are banned from entering the city. Highway speed limits have been reduced to 80 km/h to decrease emissions.

Regional Heatwave Impacts

Western and southern Switzerland remain under heat warnings as temperatures continue to exceed 30°C. Similar smog alerts were issued in the Netherlands this week, though improving conditions are forecasted.
