Tragedy Strikes Indonesian School as Building Collapses

A devastating school building collapse in East Java, Indonesia has left dozens of children trapped under rubble and claimed at least three lives, with authorities fearing the death toll will rise significantly. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the prayer room of the newly constructed school building collapsed, bringing two floors down on approximately one hundred children, mostly boys aged 12 to 18.

Construction Without Proper Permits

According to rescue operation leaders, the school lacked proper building permits for the additional floors being constructed above the prayer room. The school janitor told Associated Press that a concrete ceiling collapsed first, followed by a supporting pillar giving way. "The structural support system was clearly inadequate for the additional floors being added," said a local construction safety expert who wished to remain anonymous.

Rescue Operations Face Challenges

Hundreds of rescue workers have been working through the night to extract people from beneath the debris. Large concrete slabs and roofing materials remain dangerously piled on top of each other, making rescue efforts extremely difficult. The instability of the remaining structure prevents rescue teams from using heavy machinery, forcing them to work manually in dangerous conditions.

So far, eleven people have been rescued from the collapsed building, while dozens more have been hospitalized with fractures and head injuries. Rescue services managed to deliver oxygen, water, and food to some survivors through small openings, but they reported seeing bodies among those still trapped.
