Landmark Sentence for Daruvar Nursing Home Killer

A Croatian court has sentenced 52-year-old Kresimir Pahoki to 50 years imprisonment for the murder of six individuals at a Daruvar nursing home, including his own mother. The sentence effectively ensures Pahoki will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.

The July 2024 Massacre

On July 22, 2024, Pahoki arrived at the Daruvar care facility under the pretext of settling an outstanding bill. Without warning, he produced a firearm and opened fire, killing his mother, four elderly residents, and one healthcare worker. Six additional victims sustained serious injuries during the attack.

Aftermath and Investigation

Following the shooting, Pahoki calmly proceeded to a nearby café where police apprehended him. Throughout judicial proceedings, he maintained an unrepentant stance, explicitly telling the court he felt no guilt regarding his actions.

Psychiatric Findings

Forensic psychiatrists diagnosed Pahoki with narcissistic and antisocial personality disorders but confirmed he was fully legally competent during the attack. The evaluation concluded his disorders didn't impair his understanding of the crimes' criminal nature.

Historic Daruvar

Daruvar, a spa town in northeastern Croatia's Slavonia region, has approximately 8,500 residents. Historically known as Aquae Balissae during Roman times, the town has been renowned for over two millennia for its therapeutic thermal springs. Today, it serves as Croatia's primary cultural center for the Czech minority.
