French School Tragedy: 14-Year-Old Student Stabs Staff Member to Death During Bag Check

A 14-year-old student fatally stabbed a school staff member during a routine bag check at a secondary school in Nogent, a village north of Dijon, France. The victim, a 31-year-old education assistant, was assisting with the checks when the attack occurred. The suspect, also a student at the school, was apprehended shortly after the incident, during which a police officer sustained minor injuries.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his grief on social media, stating, "While she was watching over our children, an education assistant lost her life. The victim of a senseless wave of violence. The nation mourns, and the government is mobilized to combat crime."

This tragic event highlights the growing issue of school violence in France. In April, a similar incident in Nantes left a student dead and three others injured. Following that attack, Prime Minister Bayrou called for stricter weapon controls in schools, leading to random bag checks. Shockingly, one in ten students was found carrying a sharp object during these checks, according to the Ministry of Education.

Jean-Remi Girard, head of the National Union of Secondary Schools, emphasized the challenges of maintaining vigilance without stigmatizing students. "We cannot treat every student as a potential threat," he told France24.
