Violent Attack at Antibes Horticultural School

A violent stabbing incident has shaken a horticultural high school in southern France, leaving a teacher and student injured. The attack occurred at the educational institution in Antibes, near Cannes, where an 18-year-old former student allegedly carried out the assault while wearing camouflage pants.

Details of the Attack

The 52-year-old female teacher suffered multiple stab wounds to her abdomen and was seriously injured, while a 16-year-old male student sustained minor facial injuries. During the attack, approximately 250 students and staff were instructed to remain in their classrooms as a precautionary measure.

French media outlet BFM TV reported that the suspect had previously been known to police for "incitement to terrorism." Local authorities have not yet disclosed a clear motive for the attack, though investigations are ongoing.

Pattern of School Violence in France

This incident marks the latest in a series of school-related stabbings that have plagued France in recent years. In April 2025, a fatal stabbing occurred at a school in Nantes, resulting in the death of a student and the arrest of a 15-year-old suspect. Just two months later in June, a 14-year-old student stabbed and killed a school staff member during a bag check in Nogent.

"These repeated incidents highlight the urgent need for comprehensive security measures in our educational institutions," stated a French education official who requested anonymity.

Historical Context and Security Measures

The most notorious school attack in recent French history was the 2020 beheading of history teacher Samuel Paty by a Muslim extremist. The attacker had learned on social media that Paty had shown caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during a lesson on freedom of expression.

In response to the growing concerns, French authorities have implemented enhanced security protocols, including random bag checks for weapons and increased police presence around schools. The government has also launched educational programs addressing violence prevention and radicalization.

According to World Health Organization research, factors contributing to such violence include social inequality, substance abuse, easy access to weapons, and exposure to violent content. France continues to grapple with balancing security needs while maintaining open educational environments.
