Brazen Armed Robbery at Manhattan Pokémon Store

In a shocking incident that highlights the growing value of collectible trading cards, three armed robbers stole over $100,000 worth of Pokémon merchandise from The Poké Court store in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. The brazen robbery occurred during a community event with approximately 40 customers present, according to store owner Courtney Chin.

Three-Minute Heist Caught on Camera

Surveillance footage shows the dramatic robbery unfolding in just three minutes. The masked suspects, wearing anime-themed backpacks, entered the store around 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. One suspect brandished a firearm while another used a hammer to smash glass display cases containing valuable Pokémon cards dating from 1999 to 2016.

'Human life is precious,' store founder Courtney Chin told reporters, expressing relief that no one was injured during the terrifying ordeal. 'We're just grateful everyone is safe.'

The robbers made off with rare Pokémon cards featuring characters including Charizard, Pikachu, Treecko, and Ho-Oh, along with approximately $1,000 in cash and a customer's cell phone. The total estimated loss exceeds $116,000.

Growing Value of Pokémon Collectibles

This robbery underscores the significant financial value that Pokémon trading cards have acquired in recent years. According to market analysis, some rare cards can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Pokémon Trading Card Game has produced over 75 billion cards worldwide since its 1996 debut, creating a massive secondary market for collectors.

Notable high-value cards include the 1999 Base Set 1st Edition Charizard, which sold for a record $550,000 in December 2025, and the ultra-rare Pikachu Illustrator promo, with only about 40 known copies worldwide.

Security Concerns for Collectible Stores

This incident follows a pattern of similar robberies targeting trading card stores across the United States. Stores in Boston, Los Angeles, and Seattle have reported comparable thefts in recent months, prompting increased security measures throughout the industry.

'We're considering all options for improving security,' Chin stated, noting that police have recommended hiring an armed guard for future events. 'The Pokémon community is strong, and we won't let this stop us from gathering.'

The Poké Court, which opened just two months ago in November, specializes in Pokémon cards, accessories, and Pokémon-inspired lifestyle goods. Despite the traumatic event, the store has already reopened, with staff emphasizing that the love of Pokémon must continue.

Police Investigation Ongoing

New York City police are actively searching for the three suspects, who remain at large. Authorities have released surveillance images and are asking for public assistance in identifying the individuals.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of how what was once considered children's entertainment has evolved into a serious investment market, with all the security concerns that accompany valuable assets.
