Italian Police Bust Europe's Largest Illegal Cigarette Operation

Italian authorities have uncovered what they describe as the largest illegal cigarette factory ever discovered in Italy, located in an underground bunker near Cassino between Rome and Naples. The sophisticated operation spanned over 3,000 square meters and was capable of producing more than seven million cigarettes daily.

Sophisticated Hidden Facility

The factory was concealed beneath what appeared to be an abandoned logistics center, accessible only through a secret entrance operated by a remote control hidden in a box above ground. Inside, investigators found a fully equipped facility with sleeping quarters for approximately 18 workers, complete with kitchens and bathrooms.

'This represents one of the most sophisticated illegal tobacco operations we have ever encountered,' stated a spokesperson for the Guardia di Finanza, Italy's financial police force responsible for combating tax evasion and smuggling.

Massive Tax Evasion Scheme

Authorities estimate the operation enabled tax evasion exceeding €500 million, with estimated revenues of around €130 million. The 150 million cigarettes seized during the raid were distributed both within Italy and across other European Union countries.

The Guardia di Finanza, established in 1774, specializes in financial crimes and tax evasion investigations. According to Wikipedia, this militarized law enforcement agency operates under Italy's Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Ongoing Investigation

During the raid, one individual was arrested, but authorities have indicated that additional charges are forthcoming. The investigation continues as officials work to dismantle the entire smuggling network.

The discovery highlights the ongoing challenge of illegal tobacco trade in Europe, where high taxation creates lucrative opportunities for criminal organizations to profit from untaxed cigarette production and distribution.
