Florida Jury Convicts Ryan Routh in High-Profile Assassination Attempt Case

A federal jury in West Palm Beach, Florida, has found Ryan Wesley Routh guilty of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump during a golf outing at Trump International Golf Club. The 59-year-old was convicted on all five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate and weapons violations.

The verdict came after just two hours of deliberation by the twelve-member jury. Immediately following the announcement, Routh attempted to harm himself with a pen but was quickly subdued and returned to the courtroom. Sentencing is scheduled for December, where Routh faces a potential life sentence.

Ten Hours in Hiding

Prosecutors revealed during the 12-day trial that Routh had meticulously planned the attack for weeks. On September 15, 2024, he spent approximately ten hours concealed in shrubbery near the sixth hole, armed with a rifle, waiting for Trump to approach.

Secret Service agents conducting a routine sweep spotted Routh aiming his weapon when Trump was just a few hundred yards away at the fifth hole. "Without the intervention of our Secret Service agent, President Trump would not be alive today," stated prosecutor John Shipley during closing arguments.

Self-Representation and Failed Defense

Routh chose to represent himself without legal counsel, a decision that proved unsuccessful. He argued that he never intended to harm anyone, claiming, "It's difficult for me to believe a crime was committed when no trigger was pulled." However, the jury found the prosecution's evidence overwhelming.

The incident occurred just nine weeks after Trump survived another assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, heightening security concerns around the former president. Justice Minister Bondi praised the verdict, calling Routh's actions "not just an attack on our president but an affront to our entire nation."
