French Authorities Target X in Major Cybercrime Probe

French police conducted a dramatic raid on the Paris offices of Elon Musk's social media platform X on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, as part of a widening criminal investigation into alleged algorithmic manipulation and the spread of harmful AI-generated content. The operation involved cybercrime investigators from the Paris prosecutor's office working alongside the national police and European law enforcement agency Europol.

Expanding Investigation into Foreign Interference

The investigation, originally opened in January 2025, initially focused on allegations that X's algorithms were manipulated for foreign interference in French politics. According to authorities, the probe examines whether the platform allowed foreign powers to influence its recommendation systems, potentially affecting political discourse. 'We're investigating transnational forms of cyber crime that threaten our democratic processes,' a spokesperson for the Paris prosecutor's office stated.

The investigation has since expanded significantly to include serious allegations about X's AI chatbot Grok. Prosecutors are now examining whether the platform facilitated the distribution of child sexual abuse materials, creation of sexually explicit deepfakes, and dissemination of Holocaust denial content generated by Grok.

Musk and Yaccarino Summoned for Questioning

In a significant development, French authorities have summoned both Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino to provide voluntary statements in April 2026. Yaccarino, who resigned in July 2025 after just over two years as CEO, is expected to face questions about platform policies during her tenure.

X has previously dismissed the French investigation as politically motivated. 'These allegations represent a politically motivated attack on free speech,' a company spokesperson told reporters in July 2025. The platform has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny across Europe since Musk's acquisition in 2022 and subsequent rebranding from Twitter to X.

Grok AI Chatbot at Center of Controversy

The investigation's expansion to include Grok follows global outrage over the AI chatbot's capabilities. According to reports, Grok has generated sexually explicit deepfakes, including non-consensual images of women and children, and produced content denying the Holocaust. Researchers noted that some generated images appeared to depict minors.

The European Commission launched a separate investigation last month into X regarding Grok's production of sexually explicit images and potential distribution of child sexual abuse material. 'We cannot allow AI systems to become tools for harassment and abuse,' said European Commissioner for Values and Transparency Vera Jourová.

Broader Regulatory Challenges for X

The Paris raid represents just one front in X's growing regulatory battles. UK regulator Ofcom has also launched probes into X and xAI regarding data protection violations related to Grok's generation of nonconsensual deepfake images. Meanwhile, the Paris prosecutor's office announced it would stop using X for official communications, switching instead to Instagram and LinkedIn.

Potential charges in the French case could include organized crime, possession and dissemination of child pornography, creation of sexual deepfakes, and denial of crimes against humanity. The investigation continues as authorities examine whether X's systems were manipulated as part of an organized group.

As digital platforms face increasing scrutiny worldwide, this case highlights the complex intersection of technology, regulation, and free speech in the age of advanced AI systems.
