Stranded ship remains stuck in Norwegian backyard

The 135-meter-long cargo ship NCL Salten, which ran aground in a Norwegian backyard yesterday, remains stuck for now. Multiple boats from the Norwegian Coast Guard attempted to tow the vessel away, but without success.

The ship drifted off course in a fjord near Trondheim during the night from Wednesday to Thursday, eventually running aground near the village of Byneset on Thursday morning. No injuries were reported. Sixteen crew members, including Russians, Ukrainians, and Norwegians, were on board during the incident.

Remarkably, the resident of the neighboring house noticed nothing when the ship stranded just meters away—he was asleep. "I didn't hear a thing," said Johan Helberg, who was woken by a call from his neighbor. "When I looked out the window, I was quite surprised to see a large ship in my backyard."

The collision caused a landslide, forcing evacuations. Residents were allowed to return home last night as the ship remains immobile. Geological surveys are needed before any attempt to refloat the vessel can be made.
