Renewed Violence Claims Over 80 Lives in Gaza

Israeli military strikes on Gaza have killed at least 81 Palestinians, including 24 children, according to hospital sources in the besieged territory. The attacks, which began Tuesday evening, represent the most significant escalation since the ceasefire agreement was established. The Israeli military stated it launched the offensive due to 'repeated ceasefire violations by Hamas' and has since announced the resumption of the truce 'in accordance with guidelines'.

Targeted Strikes Across Gaza

The Israeli air raids targeted multiple locations across Gaza, including a house in Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, a building in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood, and a vehicle in Khan Younis. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the military to carry out 'heavy attacks' following reports that Palestinian militants fired on Israeli soldiers, though Hamas denied involvement in the incident.

US President Donald Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea, expressed confidence that the ceasefire would hold despite the violence. 'They killed an Israeli soldier, so the Israelis are hitting back and they should,' Trump stated. 'When that happens, they should hit back too.'

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The renewed violence comes amid an already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Carolien Willemen, a Doctors Without Borders (MSF) coordinator working at a field hospital in Deir al-Balah, described the devastating impact on civilians. 'The impact of the ceasefire violations here is underestimated,' Willemen told reporters. 'In the three weeks that the truce has been in effect, people in Gaza are now experiencing a complete nightmare for the second time.'

Medical and Nutritional Crisis

Willemen, who coordinates aid efforts at the field hospital, highlighted the ongoing medical crisis. 'The fear has completely returned. A brother of one of my colleagues was brought in dead, that one-year-old child who comes in dead. It's the reality that hides behind the sterile politics of wording,' she said emotionally.

The MSF coordinator also expressed concern about the approaching winter and inadequate humanitarian assistance. 'The aid is also insufficient when it comes to tents. The nights are getting colder and people here are still living in makeshift tents that cannot protect them against the coming winter.'

According to MSF reports, over 67,000 Palestinians have been killed and 169,000 wounded since the conflict escalated in October 2023, with 44,000 children orphaned. A state of famine has been declared in Gaza City, and 92% of housing units are destroyed or damaged.

Ceasefire Fragility

This marks the second major violation of the ceasefire in recent weeks. The fragile truce has been repeatedly broken by both sides, resulting in dozens of Palestinian deaths and the loss of three Israeli soldiers during the ceasefire period.

The conflict over hostage returns has further complicated the situation. Israel accused Hamas of staging a 'fake recovery' of remains, while Hamas delayed handing over another hostage's body, creating additional tensions in the already fragile peace process.

As winter approaches and the humanitarian situation remains critical, international organizations continue to call for unrestricted aid access and sustained diplomatic efforts to maintain the ceasefire and address the growing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
