Hundreds of people in Colombia have taken to the streets to condemn the attack on Senator Miguel Uribe, who was shot during a campaign rally in the capital Bogota. Uribe, a 39-year-old presidential candidate for next year's elections, remains in critical condition after undergoing neurosurgery and treatment for a gunshot wound to his left thigh.

Protesters in Bogota called for a reduction in violent political rhetoric, which they say has heightened tensions nationwide. Demonstrators carried a massive Colombian flag and chanted slogans such as "Miguel, my friend, Colombia stands with you."

Uribe, a member of the conservative opposition party Centro Democrático, was shot from behind in a public park, sustaining two head wounds and one to his knee. Current leftist President Petro has ordered security forces to investigate the attack and identify those responsible.
