The global population is aging rapidly, with adults over 65 now outnumbering children under five for the first time in history. By 2030, nearly 1 billion people will be in this age group. While childhood immunization programs have saved countless lives, adult vaccination remains underutilized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

A recent WHO study published in Vaccines highlights the importance of adult vaccination for healthy aging, reducing healthcare costs, and combating antimicrobial resistance. Despite WHO recommendations for vaccines against diseases like influenza, COVID-19, and pneumococcal disease, access is unequal, leaving many adults unprotected.

Dr. Alba Vilajeliu, lead author of the study, emphasizes that vaccination at every life stage is crucial for protecting lives, improving quality of life, and alleviating pressure on health systems. The Immunization Agenda 2030 aims to ensure everyone benefits from vaccines, regardless of age.
