In a postal sorting center in Langenzenn, southern Germany near Nuremberg, at least twelve people fell ill after the discovery of an unknown substance. According to a police spokesperson, powder was found in a suspicious package.
Those present complained of irritation. Seven of them were hospitalized. The police expect the number of affected individuals to rise.
The building, operated by delivery service DHL, was evacuated. The fire department decontaminated employees who requested it. Around 35 workers took advantage of this service. According to emergency services, there is no further danger to public health.
DHL was previously targeted by incendiary devices in several European countries last year. German and UK media reported that intelligence services suspected a link to Russian sabotage, which Russia denies. Three suspects were arrested.
The origin of the package in Langenzenn and its intended recipient remain unknown.
