The European Union and the United Kingdom have announced new sanctions against Russia, marking the 17th sanctions package since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nearly 2,400 individuals and entities are now on the sanctions list, which includes travel bans and asset freezes.

The new sanctions target 189 ships from Russia's 'shadow fleet,' which transports Russian oil under different flags to evade sanctions. Additionally, over 30 companies involved in arms supplies to Russia have been added.

French President Macron recently stated that Europe and the US are working on further sanctions if a ceasefire with Ukraine fails. The US has yet to announce new measures.

Ukrainian President Zelensky had sought talks with Russian President Putin, who refused despite previously calling for direct negotiations. Zelensky has urged Western allies to impose stricter sanctions.
