There has been a historic restart in the relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union since Brexit. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in London yesterday. The negotiating parties decided this morning to improve mutual relations and have already reached agreements on fisheries, exports, and energy and defense cooperation.

According to CDA MEP Tom Berendsen, it is good news that the UK and the EU are now talking again. He acknowledges that there have been 'mutual differences' in recent years but remains hopeful for productive discussions. Agreements have already been reached in several areas.

European fishermen will be allowed to continue fishing in UK waters for the next twelve years. In return, it will be easier for the British to export products from the agricultural and fisheries sectors. There is also an agreement on energy and defense cooperation.

Berendsen emphasizes the importance of the UK for EU defense. 'The United Kingdom has the strongest army in Europe. We have a shared responsibility to ensure our security. The UK can contribute significantly to the EU in this regard.'

Negotiations are ongoing to make it easier for young people to work and live on either side of the Channel. Reuters has reviewed documents outlining the 'balanced youth experience' program, which aims to facilitate temporary work, study, volunteering, or travel for young people in the EU or the UK.
