Russia and Belarus Launch Major Military Exercise Near NATO Borders

Strategic Drills Heighten Tensions in Eastern Europe

Russia and Belarus have commenced a significant joint military exercise along their borders with Poland and the Baltic states, triggering immediate security responses from NATO members. The Zapad-2025 exercises, running from September 12-16, 2025, come at a particularly sensitive moment following recent drone incursions into Polish airspace.

Border Closures and Heightened Alert

In response to the military activities, Poland has closed its border with Belarus indefinitely, including all train connections. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the exercises as "very aggressive" and occurring "very close to the Polish border." Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński stated the borders will reopen only when the government is certain "there is no longer a threat to Polish citizens."

"This brings us closest to armed conflict since World War II," Tusk warned following recent drone incidents.

Exercise Scale and Nuclear Dimensions

According to Lithuanian military intelligence, approximately 30,000 troops are participating in the drills, though Russia and Belarus claim fewer than 10,000 soldiers are involved. This represents a significant reduction from the 200,000 troops that participated in the 2021 Zapad exercises, which preceded Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The exercises include nuclear weapons training components, with nuclear-capable systems stationed in Belarus. As Russia correspondent Geert Groot Koerkamp noted: "It stands to reason that nuclear weapons deployment is part of the exercise. There are nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus as a clear signal from Moscow to the West."

International Response and Security Measures

NATO members have responded with increased vigilance. Lithuania has enhanced border security, while France and Germany have deployed additional fighter aircraft to Poland to assist in protecting NATO's eastern flank. The Suwalki Corridor—a strategic land connection between Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad exclave—is under particular scrutiny.

Despite the heightened tensions, the Dutch caretaker government expressed measured concern. Defense Minister Brekelmans stated: "This fits with what Russia normally does. It's not something to get very stressed about." Foreign Minister Van Weel added that authorities are monitoring indicators to distinguish between exercises and potential threats.

The Zapad-2025 exercises represent the first major Russian-Belarusian military cooperation since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, occurring amidst ongoing regional instability and security concerns.
